Toolbox Studio Makes the Marathi Film Industry Proud

An animation studio in the city has quietly been adding top Marathi movie projects to its kitty.

Baji, the superhero movie that marked the return of actor Shreyas Talpade in the Marathi film industry after seven years released a couple of months ago. This movie has managed to create history by becoming the Marathi film with the most number of visual effects (VFX) so far. This masterpiece directed by Nikhil Mahajan, has featured a whopping 250 VFX shots that were very subtly merged with live action scene by Pune’s very own Toolbox Studio.

Baji had managed to create a buzz from its first look itself. The amazingly done graphic design of the teaser posters got many people talking about the movie.

“I like to tell stories visually, through sound and without unnecessary dialog. I personally am not trained in visual effects but wherever in the visualization I feel the need for such imagery, I work with my talented friend Sameer Talwalkar from a VFX company Toolbox and tell him what I want. But after 2 such graphically intensive projects, now I somewhat know how things are done but I am not trained in it,” said Mahajan when he was asked about the VFX of his greatest success, Baji.

‘Marathi Stars’ a very popular film critics website, had many praises for this blockbuster. “Baji is a rare example of a close to three hour movie that doesn’t force you to look at the clock even once. As far as the first half is concerned, the fascinating and intriguing storyline, creative narration and Mahajan’s mature handling of the subject leave you super-impressed! The shadow fighting sequence is a sheer pleasure and it deserves special mention. At this point itself you realize the film is an achievement for Marathi cinema.”

Starting small, Toolbox has now evolved into a creative hub for Visual Effects & Animation, TV Commercials, Motion Graphics and Corporate Video Production. They provide solutions to a range of industries that include Film, Broadcast, Online and Digital.

"We are currently focused on VFX projects for Marathi and Hollywood films," says Chaphekar, a graduate of Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya. Chaphekar and his team work in guarded secrecy at an office in Baner. The animators at Toolbox work in pitch black darkness. "Working in dim light is necessary as it helps them to see images better on monitors," says Chaphekar.
