Titan Elements' Career Advice for College Students

The first day of classes has arrived at universities around the country. At Titan Elements, memories of college days and majors are still fresh in many team member's mind. They recently shared their advice to current students.

“College is about gaining knowledge,” cited Matt Z., Titan Element’s president. “There are two kinds of knowledge you’ll attain during your university years. The first is the academic learning you’ll acquire from your classes and professors. The second is knowledge about yourself. The combination will determine your future career path.”

Matt suggested college students start to consider their career paths as early as possible in order to maximize the educational investment. “A lot of students start off college as ‘Undecided.’ That’s fine in the short-term,” he said. “After all, there’s a lot to learn about the world and where you see yourself in it. However, at some point you need to declare a major. Given the cost for each day of class at a private institution can average around $300 to $500, you probably want to be sure your time and money is spent on something you’ll benefit from in five or 10 years.”

Citing passion as the number one factor in career determination, Matt proposed the following course of action for students who are still exploring their options. “Think about what excites you. What fields could you spend hours engaged in and never once check your watch?” he asked. “These are the areas in which you should be searching for career opportunities. Don’t limit yourself in terms of options. The knowledge you attain in many fields can be applied broadly across many vocations. Several of our Titan Elements’ associates never believed their majors would lead to sales marketing, yet their diverse experiences have allowed our team to be extraordinary.”

Titan Elements President on How to Attain Practical Knowledge

As Matt highlighted, knowledge from academic classes is one aspect of the college experience. “Your career isn’t based simply on textbook examples,” he emphasized. “You need to gain practical experience as well. This is beneficial not only for building your resume, but it also allows you to discover career opportunities that you might not have considered.”

“Internships especially provide you with hands-on experience in your anticipated line of work,” Matt stated. “Even more, they expose you to different industries and the related vocations. The key with internships, though, is to be careful that the program you enter is geared toward helping you learn and enhancing your practical skills. Avoid programs in which interns are used as extensions of the clerical staff.”

Matt noted that Titan Elements interns follow the same training as new associates. “We help them gain skills in areas that are important to their future paths,” he added. “Many return to work for us after graduation.”

“Your college years can be the most productive of your life,” Matt concluded. “Certainly you want to have fun. However, remember that you are also there to establish your future. It’s up to you to attain a decent ROI.”
