The Housing Rights of the LBGTQ Community are Now Further Protected Under a Presidential Order
DENVER, February 12, 2021 (Newswire.com) - GayRealEstate.com, a service which connects buyers and sellers with compatible agents, is pleased to announce that The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is taking intentional steps forward to enforce a new executive order signed by President Biden on Jan. 20, 2021 (his first day in office) which will significantly advance and protect the housing rights of the LBGTQ community.
Across America, housing discrimination against the LBGTQ community remains prevalent. GayRealEstate.com notes "more than 1/3 of Americans still don't believe (the LBGTQ) community deserves protection and dignity in housing, employment, adoption, and other areas of life."[1]
This new Presidential order signed in January serves as a means to fully enforce Title VII as it relates to the LBGTQ communities. The policy within this order states: "every person should be treated with respect and dignity and should be able to live without fear, no matter who they are or whom they love." Further, "people should be able to...secure a roof over their heads without being subjected to sex discrimination. All persons should receive equal treatment under the law, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation."[2]
From a practical standpoint, the executive order instructs each agency within the US government, including HUD, to review existing orders and policies as well as agency actions as pertaining to Title VII which may be inconsistent with the policy set forth in this order to ensure the prohibition of discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation. A plan for implementing changes is due within 100 days of the order.
The fight for fair treatment of the LBGTQ community as it pertains to housing is not new, and yet this executive order promises hope for the future in the eradication of discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation for all Americans. GayRealEstate.com applauds this order and what it means for our target customers, having helped to pioneer this battle since the early 1990s, seeking to ensure members of the LGBTQ community "could be assured of fair, equal, and honest representation" by someone that understood their unique needs and desires.[3]
