Let's make a toast! To your health! It's no secret that wine is actually good for you.
When consumed in moderation and paired with a healthy diet wine can do great things for your health.

You can thank wine's alcohol content and non-alcoholic phytochemical that occur naturally in the plant compounds for it's health boosting effects. Wine has been shown to reduce the risks of heart disease, certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological degenerative diseases and disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. It's been well documented that moderate amount of wine can raise your good cholesterol and thin your blood.

The flavonoids and resveratrol in wine act as antioxidants and prevent molecules called "free radicals" from causing cellular damage. Some studies that focus on the health benefits of resveratrol call for much larger doses of resveratrol than you'd find in a glass of wine. Red wine is known to have much more of the resveratrol than it's white counterpart.

But before you start getting too crazy, it's important to note that the amount of wine you drink has a huge effect on its health properties. If you drink more than the recommended amount of wine your health risks actually go up.

Here's what doctors and health experts recommend:
Women - No more than one glass of wine per day
Men - No more than two glasses of wine per day
One glass of wine is defined as a five ounce glass of red or white wine.
