Texas Has a Wholly Unique State Fair Food Experience

Texas offers the widest variety of award-winning fried food options during the annual state fair extravaganza. Diverse choices improve the experience for fair patrons in some unexpected ways.

Everything's bigger in Texas and the food is no exception. The Texas State Fair goes big with fried foods, coming up with some of the most unusual deep fried combinations. The Texas State Fair has been awarding the most unique deep fried food creations in the Big Tex Choice Awards for the past ten years.

The 2015 winner for most unique deep fried food was awarded to Chicken Fried Lobster with Champagne Gravy. This year's winner took classy to a new level combining two fancy flavors and deep fried fair tradition. The combination included a whole lobster tail breaded and deep fried, with champagne and lemon butter gravy. Runner-up for this year was a new take on corn called Cowboy Corn Crunch, which combines sweet corn, jalapeño, smoky bacon and cream cheese within a tot and deep-fried.

When you taste [deep fried butter], it really does taste like a hot roll with butter... it tastes great.

Sue Gooding, Texas State Fair Spokeswoman

The first deep fried concoction to win the Best Taste award was the Deep Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly and Banana Sandwich in 2005. The gooey sandwich is made by first freezing it and then dipping it in batter and finishing it up with deep-frying. The sandwich is then topped with powdered sugar. Other winners have proved that just about anything can be fried, including the Best Taste winner in 2006, Fried Coke. While it may seem outrageous to fry a liquid, infusing the Coke flavor into a batter and then deep-frying the batter is what makes Fried Coke stand out. The fried batter is then topped with drizzled fountain syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar, and a cherry on top. Coke was not the only liquid to be deep fried: the following year, Deep Fried Latte won the award. In this winner, light puff pastry with coffee flavoring is fried, then topped with cappuccino ice cream for the caffeine and sugar addicts.

One of the most puzzling deep fried winners was 2009's Deep Fried Butter, which was awarded the title of Most Creative. Texas State Fair Spokeswoman Sue Gooding gave the concoction top remarks and told the today show "when you taste it, it really does taste like a hot roll with butter... it tastes great." Previous winners included Fire and Ice, a battered pineapple fried and topped with whipped cream; Fried Club Salad; Fried Bubblegum; and Deep Fried Breakfast for Dinner. With the wide variety of creative combinations, the Texas State Fair has proved just about anything can be fried and taste good, too.
