Texans' Glover Quin Selected To Join United Way's "Team NFL"
Online, April 16, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Houston, TX - Houston Texans' strong safety, Glover Quin, was selected to join United Way's "Team NFL" in its fight to address the increasing number of high school drop outs in America. Quin joins a host of NFL stars representing all 32 franchises, including Baltimore Ravens' Vonta Leach, Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton, Green Bay Packers' Greg Jennings, and Philadelphia Eagles' Nnamdi Asomugha.
As a United Way representative, Quin will be responsible for a multitude of activities to help garner volunteers who will tutor and mentor young people until they graduate. Through traditional and social media, Quin will work with the local United Way chapter to engage the Houston community and challenge them to work with "Team NFL". Additionally, he will participate in the NFL Live United Campaign, acting as spokesperson for United Way's work in education.
By 2014, Quin has been challenged to help recruit 3,000 volunteer pledges. "Team NFL" currently represents 96,000 pledges, less than 10% of the overall goal. Quin's role kicks off in June when he joins the rest of the team in Washington D.C. for United Way's national "Team NFL" Day of Action.
"It truly is an honor and a blessing to be in a position where I am able to give back to the community," said Quin. "United Way has provided me an opportunity to encourage others to get involved and make a difference in the lives of the next generation."
One million students drop out of high school each year in America. United Way aims to cut this number in half by 2018. Through partners like the National Football League, United Way will recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors by 2014. To implement this key strategy, a group of college-educated players from each of the 32 NFL teams have been selected as ambassadors for United Way's "Team NFL". The players will utilize their relationships to help 560,000 young people graduate high school by 2018.
