“Telling Our Stories:

How To Educate Future Generations On Our Past Without Living In The Past”

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA  During a time when Virginia law prohibited black and white children from attending the same schools and the US Supreme Court overturned the Civil Rights Act of 1875 what became of the children and their education.  In the midst of this shameful time in history two sisters stepped forward to make a change in the lives of many African-American children yet few know their story.

Ryan Heathcock is determined that this will be the case no longer.  Ryan Heathcock has returned to his roots here in Richmond Virginia with his own video production company, Ryan Int’l to help support local residents through his initiative, “Once Upon a Time” (OUAT). OUAT was created with the intent to give individuals and historical institutions the opportunity to video document their stories to ensure that their history and legacy are preserved and passed on to the next generation “in their own words”.

After 20 years of working in video production and documentary filmmaking, Ryan turned his camera, and his attention, to researching and documenting his own family history and genealogy.  Opening the door to OUAT. Today, Ryan still contracts his professional video production services to Non-Profits, NGO’s as well as corporate clients across the country documenting such greats as Angela Davis, Sonia Sanchez, Susan Taylor, Jada Pinkett Smith, Levar Burton and even Civil Rights icon Rev. C.T. Vivian just to name a few.  However, today he is turning his passion to supporting amateur genealogist, professional genealogist and every day men and women by offering the opportunity to document their family histories and pass them on to the next generations, as well as working with historical societies and institutions to bring attention to their organizations stories and to preserve their legacies for future generations.

Join Ryan, Powhatan County District 5 Supervisor, Carson Tucker, Executive Director FrancisEmma Inc., Sister Maureen Carroll, District School Board Representative, Kim Hymel, President Historical Society, John Rothert, Executive Director, Powhatan Chamber of Commerce Angie Cabell, and other community advocates to highlight the importance of keeping and preserving our history while looking to the future with hope and optimism. Belmead will feature as the backdrop for this discussion for its recognition by the National Historic Trust as one of our countries most important historic sites for preservation while also learning the significance of Oral History Documentation Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 5004 Cartersville Road, Powhatan, Virginia 23139 at 1pm.
