Team SLR/Fields Racing to Enter Driver's Edge Racer Sam Mayer at Road Atlanta
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fl., March 26, 2019 (Newswire.com) - Team SLR/Fields Racing will field an entry for 15-year-old Midwest racer Sam Mayer in the Trans-Am Series by Pirelli race at Road Atlanta on March 29 and 30. Mayer, a part of Team Chevy’s Driver’s Edge Development program who is racing full-time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series for GMS Racing this season along with making select starts in the ARCA Menards Series and the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, will be making his first start in the Trans Am series in the upcoming event.
Team SLR co-owner Scott Lagasse Sr. watched the young racer compete in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season opener at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida last month and was impressed with what he saw. “Sam made some smart decisions on the track in that race. He had several chances to make a mess but he kept himself in check and did a nice job. I enjoyed talking with him and getting to know him. We’re bringing him to a track that is very technical in nature. Road Atlanta has a couple of different blind corners and it takes a lot of laps to really master. He raced well in the K&N car at Watkins Glen last year, so we know that he has a feel for a road course in stock cars, but this will be a very different experience for him both in terms of the type of car and the complexity of the course.”
For his part, Mayer says he knows that Road Atlanta will be both challenging and educational, and says he’s ready for the challenge. “I’m never afraid of a challenge,” he smiled. “I love racing on road courses. For me, the chance to go run a Trans Am Chevrolet Camaro at Road Atlanta will be fun, and I know I’m going to learn a lot racing against drivers who have done this type of racing for a long time. But I will have some of the best teachers in Scott Lagasse and his team, so I’m confident that I can get up to speed and do well. I am thankful for the opportunity to race with Team SLR at Road Atlanta.”
The Trans-Am Series presented by Pirelli is known as America’s Road Racing Series, dating back to 1966. Throughout the years, some of the greatest names in motorsports have participated in the Trans-Am Series. Names like Tommy Kendall, Mark Donohue, Peter Gregg, Bob Tullius, and Wally Dallenbach, Jr. have all won multiple championships under the Trans Am name.
Road Atlanta will host the Trans-Am Series by Pirelli race on March 29 and 30. The event will be the second of twelve scheduled events for the series in 2019.
