Surfing in the Maldives

The surfing season in the Maldives has begun, lovers of the sport should head over to the North Male Atoll area of the Maldives between May and September to make the most out of the incredible Indian Ocean swells.

The Maldives surfing scene began when two Australian surfers, Tony Hussein Hinde and Mark Scanlon were on their way to Sri Lanka but were shipwrecked on the shores of Male. After spending months attempting to fix their boat they were eventually distracted by the great surfing conditions of the Maldives and stayed. Tony eventually opened Atoll adventures surfing camp and the Maldives' reputation for excellent surf conditions boomed.

The best places to surf in the Maldives are in the North Male Atoll and the Sheraton Full Moon & Spa Resort and the Four Seasons Kuda Huraa Resort offer some of the best surfing in the area. The waves in the Maldives reach 8-10ft during the surf season.

This year there is one major surfing competition to be held in the Maldives, from August 26th to September 2nd, the Four Seasons Resort will be holding the Surfing champions Trophy.
