Stop Topping The Golf Ball
Online, April 17, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Topping the golf ball from the tee is a common problem for lots of amateur golfers, as is skying the ball. The strange thing is that although these two common problems look very different, they actually have the same underlying causes, which is poor execution of one or more of the three fundamentals of the golf swing - the take-away, balance throughout the swing, and the angle of the swing.
In the article below, PGA Master professional and Mizuno Staff Instructor, Denis Pugh explains how getting any of these three fundamentals wrong can result in either a topped or a skyed tee shot.
Denis begins by talking about the take away. He explains that it needs to be a long, wide take away, during which you feel as though you are stretching your arms away from your body. If instead you pick up the club using your hands and wrists, you will chop at the ball, instead of sweeping it off the tee. If you chop down on top of the ball, the result will be a topped shot. If you chop down behind the ball, it will pop up off the top of your club, resulting in a skied shot.
Next Denis talks about balance throughout the swing. If you move around too much, you probably won't be in the correct position at impact. If your body is behind the ball at impact, the result will be a topped shot. If your body gets ahead of the ball, the result will be a skyed shot. The secret is to coil and uncoil your body around a central pivot, in order to minimise the amount of lateral movement during your swing.
Finally Denis talks about the angle of your swing. He explains how getting it too steep, or too shallow can cause topped or skyed shots - especially when combined with too much lateral movement throughout the swing.
If you work on the simple fixes that Denis explains in this short article, you will quickly remove these frustrating, and embarrassing errors from your game.
