Southern African Restaurant Concept, Peri Peri, Plans Opening In La Jolla

Peri Peri will open in June 2012 at 909 Prospect St.

La Jolla's culinary scene is about to get hot with the opening of Peri Peri in early June 2012. Peri Peri, referring to the name of the native fiery pepper and cooking method popularized in Mozambique, will occupy the 5,200 square foot space at 909 Prospect Street.

Peri Peri owner, William Sussman, a native South African with more than 20 years of restaurant experience domestically and abroad, describes his restaurant's look as warm with rustic tones. "Southern Africa's natural colors are rich. We want to reflect the naturally welcoming aspects of the region with a setting that blends a sense of community with a unique dining experience."

Peri Peri will feature three community tables made with full slabs of exotic Parota wood while the bar area will be completely renovated and include a lounge. The main dining area will seat 74 patrons across a hardwood floor. Outside, 56 guests can enjoy the passing parade from the elevated patio overlooking Prospect St.

Abel Gutierrez, Executive Chef of Peri Peri and the former chef of Sussman's other restaurants will debut a lunch and dinner menu in early June which besides the obvious Peri Peri Prawns will include several aromatic and flavorful dishes from the melting pot of Southern African cuisine.

Lunch and dinner will be served daily starting at 11:00 a.m., with the kitchen remaining open until at least Midnight.

"This is just the concept I'm confident La Jollans will embrace," added Sussman. "Ethnic dining continues to grow in popularity and Peri Peri brings an experience unlike no other."
