Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers Promotes World Diabetes Day

Lucien Gautreaux and Shadow of NH

Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers joins hundreds of organizations, companies, healthcare professionals, and people living with diabetes and their families around the nation and the world to promote World Diabetes Day.  World Diabetes Day is a global awareness campaign focusing on diabetes and is held on November 14 each year.  World Diabetes Day, launched in 1991 by the International Diabetes Foundation, marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who discovered insulin for the treatment of diabetes in 1922.

Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers, based in Madison, Virginia, is proud to support the Diabetic community with awareness, advocacy and education programs about Diabetes.   Established in 2010, SDWR is one of the leading providers of Diabetic Alert Dogs in Northern America.  SDWR currently has over 450 diabetic alert dogs working across the country to improve the lives and safety of the people with whom they are placed.  And over 165 families in the US are currently working with SDWR to obtain a diabetic alert dog from SDWR.  Diabetic alert dogs are trained to alert to dangerous highs or lows in blood glucose levels.  They are trained to purposefully arouse or awake their person in a medical emergency, retrieve diabetic life essentials such as glucose, glucagon, testing meters and juice.  They can also be trained to dial 911 on an emergency K9 phone.

As a mom of an active 8 yr. old, I can't express what these 'saves' from Shadow mean to me and my peace of mind.

Amanda Gautreaux, Mother of Lucien

Amanda Gautreaux, New Hampshire mother of a child diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes talks about her diabetic alert dog, “The most amazing thing about our dog, ‘Shadow’ is his ability to know when my son Lucien has too much insulin on board.  Shadow consistently catches this life-threatening situation. This saves my little boy from ‘tanking’ too low or something even worse.  As a mom of an active 8 yr. old, I can’t express what these ‘saves’ from Shadow mean to me and my peace of mind.”

Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers is dedicated to the families it serves and joins them in wearing blue today for World Diabetes Day.  SDWR remains dedicated to its mission, “Until there’s a cure, there’s a dog.”
