Screaming Crow Tattoo & Piercing Celebrates One Year In The Steel Valley

Screaming Crow Tattoo and Piercing located at 204 E. 8th Ave. in Homestead, PA has recently reached a milestone in the Steel Valley area of Pittsburgh. Opening their doors in late October of 2010 the tattoo shop owned and operated by Eric Corbin and Todd Porter is now celebrating their first year in business.

Corbin and Porter, who have been working together in the music industry for over a decade and are the purveyors of Sinners and Saints Tattoo in Shady Side. They took over the space on Eighth Ave. after the eviction of 8th Ave. Tattoo in September of 2010.

"I had been managing Sinners and Saints Tattoo for a couple years," says Corbin, "when I heard that 8th Ave. Tattoo in Homestead was gone, I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to open a second location. We thought we could go in, throw a coat of paint on the walls and be open in a couple weeks."

Unfortunately that would not be the case. By the time Corbin and Porter could legally enter their new location, they where met with a very unpleasant surprise.

"The previous tenants destroyed the place, says Porter. "We had to patch walls, replace doors, replace counter tops, sinks... It was a complete mess. However everyone who has come in since we took over the spot says it is definitely a hundred times better."

"We are very proud of the way the shop has turned out," says Corbin. "We provide clean, safe, professional tattooing and piercing at a fair price. All our artists have experience and are all properly trained."

Although the state of Pennsylvania doesn't require any licenses or credentials for tattooing or piercing, the artists at Screaming Crow Tattoo have all held apprenticeships and all have certificates in bloodborne pathogens.

Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms in the blood or other body fluids that can cause illness and disease in people. These microorganisms can be transmitted through contact with contaminated blood and body fluids.

"In today's day and age, you really must know how to prevent these kinds of things," says Porter. "You must have the proper sterilization equipment, including an autoclave, cleaning chemicals and dispose of contaminated material properly. Not only for your customers' sake, but for your own well being."

When asked the difference between getting tattooed or pierced at a tattoo shop or at someone's house Corbin had this to say.

"Stay away from scratchers. Scratchers are untrained people who bought tattoo equipment off the internet and are now messing people up. They don't have the proper training or the proper sterilization equipment and can be extremely dangerous. They can really hurt people and spread diseases like AIDS and Hepatitis. I really don't understand why people would jeopardize their health for a cheap tattoo. It will only cost you more in the long run. We fix scratcher tattoos every day. Get it done right the first time by a professional."

In celebration of their first year in business, Screaming Crow Tattoo will be mailing out 10% off coupons to all of their customers. If you would like one, all you have to do is stop by the shop and ask. They will also be offering 20% off of all military tattoos on Veteran's Day Friday, November 11.

Screaming Crow Tattoo and Piercing is located on 8th Ave. and Amity near the Waterfront in Homestead, PA. They offer clean, safe professional tattooing and piercing as well as body jewelry, t-shirts and gift certificates. The shop is open Monday through Saturday 1:00pm to 8:00pm and Sundays by appointment.
