Rincon Vacations travel guide is announcing the upcoming first annual Legend Surf Classic Puerto Rico - a unique surf contest in Rincon Puerto Rico featuring some of the original surfers that generated interest in the sport so many years ago. The Rincon PR surfing event will take place January 18-20, 2014, and is specifically designed to provide competitive divisions for mature surfers and Legends between the ages of 40 and 99, but will also concentrate on young, up-and-coming surfers aged 12 and under. This information about the Legend Surf Classic Puerto Rico is brought to you by Rincon Vacations, the most trusted travel resource in Western Puerto Rico.

The first annual Legend Surf Classic will be sponsored by local Rincon businesses and will be held at Maria's and Domes Beach, two of the most popular surf breaks in Rincon Puerto Rico. Domes Beach is located just past the El Faro de Punta Higuero lighthouse in Rincon, and is named after the decommissioned nuclear power plant located alongside the beach. The beach at Domes is rather small and doesn't draw many recreational swimmers, but its consistent wave and combination of beach and reef breaks attracts beginners and veteran surfers from all over the island.

Just down the street from Domes on Rincon's Sunset Coast is Maria's Beach, a much larger beach with a challenging break for more experienced surfers. Maria's has a rocky shoreline and boasts close-breaking waves during the winter, which typically drives away less seasoned surfers, but its close proximity to other breaks like Dogman's and Indicators makes it a favorite spot for those brave enough to paddle out. Maria's Beach is also home to Calypso Cafe, a popular Rincon PR restaurant and bar conveniently located right in the Maria's parking lot.

The Legend Classic surfing event in Rincon Puerto Rico will be accompanied by a number of other surf-related activities, including a fundraiser dinner and surfboard giveaway at Villa Cofresi Hotel on Thursday, January 16, followed by an opening ceremony and presentation at the Wine Cellar, and dinner at Ode to the Elephants in Rincon on Friday. There will also be raffles, surf movie viewings and beach parties throughout the weekend, hosted by local restaurants like Calypso Cafe and Pool Bar in Rincon.

Following the surf contest in Rincon PR, there will be another Legend Surf Classic Contest March 14-16, held at La Parada Ocho (Stop 8) surf break in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. La Parada Ocho is one of the original breaks discovered by surfers in the early 1950s and 1960s, and is named such because it is the eighth stop on the bus line from downtown San Juan. The purpose of the Legend surf contest in Old San Juan is to revive la Parada Ocho as a legendary surf spot in hopes that it will be protected for future surfing generations in Puerto Rico. Plans to restore the surf spot include adding parking, showers and other facilities for future surfers, based on designs of some of the most popular permanent surf parks located in California and Hawaii.

A third surfing event - Puerto Rico's Surfing Hall of Fame - is planned for October to November 2014, and will be held either in Rincon or San Juan to celebrate the beginning of the official surf season. The event will mark the very first Surfing Hall of Fame in Puerto Rico, and will include prizes and trophies for surfers included in the illustrious Hall of Fame. Surfing is more than just a water sport in Puerto Rico; it is an important part of the island's culture and sense of community, and surf contests like these serve as a reminder of that.
