Repela(tm) - Repellency Times Three

Aversion Technologies introduces a new product named Repela (tm), which is a combination of Denatonium Benzoate and Natural Capsaicin.

Repela(tm) is the best and most cost-effective polymer additive for animal repellency on the market today. Incorporating Repela into your plastic product will produce an invisible shield that protects the product indefinitely.

The Three Versions of Repela
Responding to specific application needs, Repela is now available with three different compositions. The best choice depends on processing temperatures and the desireability of a repellent scent.

Repela
Repela is composed of two active ingredients in either a microcrystalline wax or PVC. The "standard" ratios in Repela are 45% denatonium benzoate, 5% capsaicin, and the remaining 50% is the inactive wax or PVC. Typical reductions (letdowns) are 0.3-0.5%. This product is perfect for applications where the processing temperatures are below 209ï‚°C (408ï‚°F) and where the addition of odor repellency is not required.

Repela Plus
Repela Plus is similar to Repela but in addition has a scent added, resulting in a composition of three active ingredients in either a microcrystalline wax or PVC. The "standard" ratios in Repela are 35% denatonium benzoate, 5% capsaicin, 10% peppermint oil, and the remaining 50% is the inactive wax or PVC. Peppermint oil has been shown to be an effective animal deterrent - especially for deer. Typical reductions (letdowns) are 0.3-0.5%. This product is perfect for applications where the processing temperatures are below 209ï‚°C (408ï‚°F) and where the addition of odor repellency is desirable.

Repela HT
When processing temperatures exceed 209ï‚°C, Repela HT is the right choice. Repela HT can withstand processing temperatures of up to 340ï‚°C (644ï‚°F) without decomposing. Because many polymer melt temperatures exceed the upper temperature limit for Repela and Repela Plus, Repela HT is the only answer. When the polymer is nylon, polyamide, polycarbonate, PET, or any other high temperature plastics, Repela HT is the right choice.

How Repela Works

Research has shown that animals chew on plastic materials because they look good, smell good and taste good - Repela alters that attractiveness. In addition, just having a Repela product in the near vicinity will ward off many animals.

First, Repela has a distinct odor that is not especially attractive to animals.

Second, when the animal bites into the plastic, they will experience an extremely bitter, foul-tasting material.

Third, this bitter taste experience is combined with the extraordinarily spicy property of capsaicin that causes severe distress to the mucosa of the animal, making the mouth, nose and eyes burn.

Fourth, this combination of experiences causes an animal to fear the plastic and in future, the animal will associate the odor with the experience. This leads to behavior modification and animals avoid these products in the future.

Fifth, and most amazingly, animals not only remember the bad experience, it has been found that they pass on the knowledge to its progeny.

Sixth, the fear response and unpleasant reaction is also communicated to other animals in the vicinity.
