Red Bull Music Academy’s annual festival in New York has established itself as one of the city’s most forward-thinking event series, with highlights from its most recent edition ranging from a specially commissioned performance piece by Solange at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, a piano bar show with Atlanta rap godfathers Gucci Mane and Zaytoven and a tribute to disco’s living legend, Patrick Adams. In October, the Academy brings that same curatorial spirit to the West Coast for the inaugural Red Bull Music Academy Festival Los Angeles. Taking place throughout October, the month-long program will celebrate the musical and cultural diversity of Los Angeles, from conversations with creative trailblazers to concerts and club nights that showcase the ever-evolving sounds of the city.

As a global project with local roots, the legacy of the Academy dovetails closely with that of Los Angeles itself. The city is celebrated as a hotbed of creative energy, one powered by influences from all over the world. The Red Bull Music Academy Festival Los Angeles will shine a light on the sounds and scenes that make LA so unique, helping to reinvent established spaces while uncovering new ones.

The festival will feature the world premieres of a technicolor new direction from St. Vincent, one of music’s brightest voices; the world’s largest synth orchestra by Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda, with help from 100 powerful car sound systems and their owners; and a new audio-visual show from shapeshifting producer Arca in collaboration with Taran Allan.

In a nod to California as a cradle of hip-hop, electro and rap innovators Uncle Jamm’s Army – whose ranks include Egyptian Lover, Arabian Prince and more – will take the stage following a conversation with crew member and LA hip-hop statesman Ice-T.

The festival also spotlights the connection between Mexican metal bands and LA’s Latinx metal bands with the three-stage Todo Es Metal, and presents a special club night together with Rail Up, the collective regularly making LA dancefloors quake with sounds from the African and Latinx musical diaspora. Also during the festival, LA punk feminist icon Alice Bag shares her hard-earned wisdom in a conversation presented in partnership with the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at USC and the “Queer Networks in Chicano LA” exhibition.

Open Beta, a temporary multimedia performance space created, transformed and directed by visual artist Taran Allen, will be the site of a series of individually crafted audio-visual experiences that explore various musical worlds. In addition to Arca’s one-off show, the platform plays host to far-out and ferociously danceable electronic music (with Jlin, Total Freedom, Silent Servant, Christoph De Babalon and more); experimental performers with uncommon intensity (with Yves Tumor, Amnesia Scanner, Sadaf and more); and a brand-new performance from pop futurist SOPHIE.

Adding to its arsenal of one-of-a-kind event concepts, Red Bull Music Academy takes its video series Diggin’ in the Carts to the concert hall with legendary Japanese video game composers Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima, performing together for the first time. The festival also pays tribute to the life and spirit of visionary composer Alice Coltrane with performances of music made during her ashram years in Agoura Hills, CA, and heard on the new compilation, World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda (Luaka Bop).

No festival in LA would be complete without a foray into the world of film, so the Academy invites two directors to dive into the role music plays in some of their best-known works: Edgar Wright, the unpredictable mind behind Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver, and Floria Sigismondi, whose unique eye can be glimpsed in everything from Marilyn Manson music videos to the Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale. Bollywood’s “disco king” Bappi Lahiri will also make a rare public appearance to discuss composing for Indian cinema before launching into a performance of some of his mind-boggling hits from the past five decades at Cinefamily.

As part of its Studio Science series, Red Bull Music Academy will also host conversations with mixing and mastering expert Benjamin Tierney, who helped shape the sound of LA's spiritual jazz scene with his work on albums by Flying Lotus, J Dilla and Kamasi Washington; legendary mastering engineer Bernie Grundman, whose Midas touch helped turn records like Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Prince’s Purple Rain into gold; and Sylvia Massy, the force behind the book Recording Unhinged, whose ear can be heard in the works of Tool, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and Slayer.

Finally, LA funk maven Dâm-Funk will record the October edition of his monthly Red Bull Radio show Glydezone live in front of a studio audience, thumbing through his deep crates to present the past, present and future of the funkmosphere.

Red Bull Radio will feature LA-focused programming throughout the month of October, including event live streams from the festival, conversations with featured artists on the station’s daily Peak Time show, and more.

Tickets for Red Bull Music Academy Los Angeles go on sale August 22. See more details on the individual events, sign up for the #RBMALA newsletter and purchase tickets at la.redbullmusicacademy.com.
