RandomStorm Wireless Scanning System Set To Challenge Market Leaders

5th October 2009, Leeds, UK - Specialist network vulnerability scanning company, RandomStorm has announced the immediate availability of a low cost, high performance WLAN scanning system, AirStorm, aimed at capturing a major share of this rapidly g

Routine scanning of the corporate network has been a mandated part of the PCI compliance procedures, required by all businesses that process and store personal card holder information, since its introduction in 2005. Under the new, stricter code of practice, which came into force in mid 2008 companies are now also required to routinely scan their premises for rogue Wireless access points within range of their networks regardless of whether they have a WLAN infrastructure.
"The wireless scanning requirement was introduced to close the potential for back-door data leakage," explained RandomStorm Technical Director, Andrew Mason. "This is particularly a problem where employees are using wireless enabled laptops and mobile devices for their normal job functions that are able to by-pass the usual network security systems, connecting to the Internet via a rogue wireless access point."
AirStorm can be quickly installed and integrated as part of an iStorm or xStorm network vulnerability scanning system to enable detailed reports of wireless network activity as well as alerting network managers when untrusted access points and unauthorised connections are detected. The system can be equally used as a standalone 802.11 scanning tool to be used as when required as part of a general best practice security policy.
The technology has been developed to fill what RandomStorm believes is a major hole in the market and to directly compete with the established market leaders in this space.
Sales Director, Robin Hill commented "There are a number of premium products available on the market that are able to provide similar functionality but are typically high cost, complex and over-engineered. Companies that we speak to say that they want a simple low cost tool that is continuously scanning the airwaves and alerting when anything suspicious is detected. AirStorm provides a practical and affordable solution that integrates with our established scanning products to help maintain their PCI Compliance status."
Set-up and configuration of the AirStorm system can be completed within a few hours and without the need for specialist IT support. Pricing for the system is based on a per antenna licence basis with most locations requiring a single aerial to provide the necessary cover. ENDS
