After being reunited with his family, Polo's family finds themselves struggling to earn a living but find a way to thrive in their new home.

Rafael Polo, a veteran USN Commander, has completed his audiobook "Growing Up American: A Novel": a captivating autobiographical account of the author's life upon arriving to the United States from Cuba and the struggles he and his family faced while facing an unknown future in a new country.

Recounting his arrival to the United States, Polo begins his tale, "The eleven-year-old boy sat on the left rear seat of the car. His aunt Gloria looked out the window from the front passenger seat. The driver—well, he had no clue who the driver was—listened to WADO, a Spanish-speaking radio station. His older cousin Randy sat to his right, whose mouth pouring words like a spilling pitcher. There were four people inside the car. Four different worlds revolving around an uncertain future.

"The boy was small for his age, tipping the scales at less than a hundred pounds. An adult Labrador retriever easily outweighed him. He was wearing an old hand-me-down gray winter coat that smelled of mothballs and a fake rabbit fur hat with earflaps. He had light-brown hair, which some people called 'dirty blond,' light-brown eyes that changed to a grayish color in the light, and a terrific tan. He always had a terrific tan, having lived his entire life in Cuba. He stared out the window, a loud voice in his brain telling him, 'What is wrong with you? Get control of yourself.'

"The scenery was completely foreign to the one he had abandoned four days earlier. A scene composed of ice, snow, and smoke rising from the sidewalk. As they parked the car, he pondered over what his new life would be like."
