Engine Control Modules (ECMs) monitor a vehicle’s engine performance (including fuel, air and electrical). If something does not seem to be working properly, a vehicle’s “Check Engine” light will come on. However, there are times when these computers can go bad themselves, and therefore, cannot properly regulate the vehicle or tell if there is an actual problem.

Prior to 1996, Dodge owners in need of replacement computers could simply swap them out with used ones from the salvage yard or vehicle part store. However, that changed soon after all computers were required to be “On Board Diagnostics 2”. These “OBD-2” computers needed to be calibrated and programmed specifically to the VIN of each vehicle to function correctly. Until recently, this could only be done on board the vehicle at the dealer.
A common misunderstanding among dealers and mechanic shops is that dealer-only onboard programming remains true today. We can actually reprogram these computers off-board the vehicle and deliver them to our customers ready to just plug in and drive away. Unlike many Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, we are also able to save our customers the trouble of having the “key relearn” done as well on all Dodge vehicles.
