Professional EuroLeague Basketball Team, Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv B.C., Tests New Sleep Solution by Sleeprate to Help Players Sleep and Perform Better
TEL AVIV, Israel, January 20, 2020 (Newswire.com) - The professional EuroLeague basketball team, Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv., is testing new sleep technology and their coaches say it's already reducing travel fatigue, preventing injuries and helping players sleep better.
Maccabi Tel Aviv is the first professional basketball team in the world to use this new sleep solution – created by Sleeprate. The team’s fitness and conditioning coach, Regev Fanan, says it’s a little early for data results, but he’s already noticed a dramatic difference with players on and off the court.
“Most players are walking zombies by this point in the season, but 6-months into the season, I think it’s clear that Sleeprate is improving our team’s overall performance by helping our players sleep better,” said Fanan. “We’re now implementing Sleeprate’s data into our training routine, giving our coaches a better look at which players are most rested and who needs a longer break from the tough training routines.”
Fanan says the Sleeprate data also helps him identify what changes in conditioning need to be made to prevent injuries and improve performance.
How Sleeprate’s Technology Works
Professional basketball players spend more time on the road than other professional sports leagues with an average of four nights a week on the road, playing three games a week.
The technology, “Boost - Sleep for Performance,” uses AI algorithms that analyze a player’s heart rate throughout the night, giving them a blueprint on what they need to do during the day to sleep better.
Every night before bed, players put on a smart-watch and fill out a short questionnaire. In the morning, they fill out another questionnaire before removing the wearable. The overnight data provides players and trainers with personalized sleep insights on the amount and quality of their sleep.
Coaches and trainers are also given access to this data, telling them if a player needs more rest or additional recovery time to prevent injury.
"We’re thrilled on our collaboration with Sleeprate as it helps our players sleep better and optimizes their performance during games,” said Fanan. “Taking into account the demanding schedule we have – and all the traveling we do – Sleeprate’s development is a milestone in understanding a player's health and physical condition.”
The CEO and founder of Sleeprate, Dr. Anda Baharav, is a sleep therapist who has been published in more than 25 journals in the sleep field. She also holds several patents related to her sleep research.
Dr. Baharav hopes the “Boost - Sleep for Performance” solution will soon go beyond sleep, alerting professional athletes, coaches and team physicians who’s more likely to get sick or injured.
“It’s pretty straight-forward: if you don’t get enough sleep, you’re more likely to get sick or injured,” said Dr. Baharav. “By analyzing a player’s sleep, health habits and specific training needs, coaches can essentially predict which players are most likely to get sick or injured based on this personalized data.”
