Members of Premier, Inc.'s leadership team recently returned from an all-expenses-paid weekend in the Dominican Republic. The firm's Director discussed the importance of goals for enjoying perks like this.

Ernesto and his assistant manager Jovan C. recently returned from the latter type of business trip, after spending a weekend in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic. Ernesto was excited to enjoy some vacation time, but he also had the chance to network with other successful Directors in the industry. It was a great opportunity to find out what was working for Directors in other markets, so that he could bring those fresh ideas back to the Premier, Inc. office.

Even though he’s Premier, Inc.’s Director of Operations, Ernesto still had to set and achieve certain milestones to attend the weekend retreat in Punta Cana. For himself and members of his team, the Director recommends the S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting technique.
“S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-sensitive, and that’s exactly the way I set objectives both for myself and Premier, Inc.” Ernesto said. “I decide precisely what it is I want to achieve, and how I’ll measure my progress. The more specific I can be with those measurements, the better. Then, I check to make sure that what I want to achieve is actually possible with the tools and resources at my disposal, and that it’s a rational goal for which to strive. Finally, I give myself a deadline. This is the most effective technique I know of for setting goals and achieving them. It got me to Punta Cana, and I’ve seen it work for my team as well.”
