Positively Ninety Exhibit On Display at Northern Kentucky University
Online, February 11, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Positively Ninety: Interviews with Lively Nonagenarians, an exhibit by Cincinnati writer and photographer Connie Springer exploring active people in their 90s, is currently making its 8th Cincinnati area appearance in a show at Northern Kentucky University.
The exhibit is up now through April 5, 2013 in the Eva G. Farris Reading Room of NKU's Steely Library. (For directions to the NKU campus, visit http://www.nku.edu/campusmaps.html.)
On Thursday, February 21, from 5 - 7 pm, the public is invited to an Opening Celebration in the exhibit space, with Springer present to interact with viewers and answer questions. Light refreshments will be served.
In the exhibit Springer puts to rest her previous skewed views of getting older after living through her elderly mother's descent into dementia. The result is an exploration of aging featuring people in their 90s who continue to lead resourceful and meaningful lives.
Despite losses and hardships, the nonagenarians she interviewed actively participate in their surroundings, think in terms of purpose and goals, care deeply about others, and keep their minds and bodies in shape with exercise and stimulating pastimes. Prominent in the exhibit is a list of 20 Personality Traits of Lively Nonagenarians, a compendium of behavior patterns for aging well.
Springer accompanies the narratives with sensitive color photographic portraits of the nonagenarians. "What's wonderful about what you've done," comments the daughter of one of the nonagenarians, "is that you've made old people look beautiful as well as important."
A City of Cincinnati Artist's Grant was awarded to Springer to help fund the documentary project.
After many exhibit viewers asked her "Where's the book?" she did indeed produce a book of the exhibit, Positively Ninety. The book will be available for sale at the opening for $25 (plus tax). A poster of the nonagenarian faces can also be purchased.
Springer has now turned her skills in writing and photography into a personal history and company history writing consulting business.
