Pistols and Prayers & Books Inc. In-Store Event With Author Ise Lyfe
Online, November 7, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Author Ise Lyfe brings his book "Pistols and Prayers" to Books Inc. in Alameda on Saturday, November 12. During his in-store appearance at Books Inc. (1344 Park Street, Alameda, CA) at 7 pm, Lyfe will speak and read from "Pistols and Prayers" followed by a book signing. Pistols and Prayers: a collection of poems, rhymes and anecdotes is a collage of thought provoking sociopolitical commentary, blended with Lyfe's experiences coming of age as a man, artist, and advocate for social change.
As an educator and activist, Ise Lyfe shares subject matter from "Pistols and Prayers" in colleges and high schools all over the United States and abroad. "We released the book independently and it was such a success I thought I'd try packaging it in a format people normally receive, which is speakers," says Lyfe. "I also wanted to create a way for teachers to use my book to engage young people and I thought an audio version could be a fresh teaching tool."
"Pistols and Prayers," the first book written by Ise Lyfe, was published in 2009. Lyfe wrote and directed a theater piece based on the book, by the same title, sold out the Tony Award winning Berkeley Repertory Theater and became the feature theatre presentation at the Pan African Film Festival. As a spoken word and hip-hop theater artist, Ise Lyfe was featured on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on HBO and shared the stage with legendary artists like Lauryn Hill, Dave Chappelle, Gil Scott- Heron, KRS-One, and Harry Belafonte to name a few.
Recently appointed Commissioner of Arts and Cultural Affairs for the city of Oakland, Lyfe works in conjunction with his company, Lyfe Productives, LLC to engage audiences in dialogues around apathy, race, media and education.
