PD & CC's Dr. Jennifer Reichel, M.D., Improves the Look of Aged, Hollowed Eyes with Fat Injection

Dr. Reichel also offers fat transfer procedures, improving the look of facial imperfections

With age, many adults often lose volume in areas such as the eyes, cheeks, and temples. This loss of volume often results in unwanted facial creases, or an aged, "hollow" look around the eyes. Fortunately, an innovative procedure known as "fat injection" can help correct and improve this aged look in patients.

Dr. Jennifer Reichel, of Pacific Dermatology & Cosmetic Center in Seattle, has extensive experience with this procedure. "Fat injections are when fat from one area of the patient's body is harvested, purified, and then re-injected into a target area of the face," Dr. Reichel explains, "The fat fills in areas of lost volume, restoring a patient's appearance. Using the patient's own fat as filler is quite effective, since it has the same consistency as facial tissue. This fat is usually taken from areas such as the abdomen, or thighs."

According to Dr. Reichel, the procedure begins with the thighs or abdomen (the "donor" area) being cleaned and anesthetized with tumescent anesthesia. Following anesthesia, the fat is then removed using a narrow tube known as a cannula. The cannula is then attached to a sterile syringe where the fat is collected, and purified for injection into the area targeted for treatment. Following the fat being harvested and purified, the targeted treatment area is numbed and the fat is injected. Patients will be given some pain medication prior to the procedure, as well as a light sedative. In some cases, patients will experience side-effects such as swelling or discomfort, so a few days are recommended to recover from the procedure.

"The effects of this procedure last for many years," Dr. Reichel says, "Also, because the fat comes from the patient's body, the body will not react against the fat, like it can with other fillers. I highly recommend this treatment for patients who want to enhance their appearance in a more natural way."
