Pace Events Dispenses Critical Career Advice to Recent Grads

As the strains of pomp and circumstance become a distant memory and the celebration turns to questions about what's next, the team at Pace Events recently opened up about career advice and what is pertinent for recent grads to know.

“I think we all remember that first month or so after graduation, when we were struggling to decide on a career path that justified our four years of college,” shared Andrew, Pace Events’ director of operations. “It’s both an exciting and nerve-wracking period of time.”

Andrew suggested that before embarking on a job search, new grads should do some research to match their skills and degree with potential career opportunities. “So many individuals leave school with a vision that they have to follow a certain path because they have a particular degree,” he stated. “The truth is, the knowledge you acquired can have much broader applications. Take communications, for example. You may think that’s primarily for public relations or media, but you can transfer those skills to interactive marketing, like we do at Pace Events, or a number of fields such as customer service. The broader you think, the more opportunities you’ll find.”

Internships are a valuable tool that Andrew suggested grads investigate. “In an internship, you not only gain practical experience, but you can observe what is really going on in a field and you can decide whether it’s right for you,” he said. “Ask lots of questions about potential career paths and how long people tend to stay in their roles. You don’t necessarily want to be in the same position for 10, 20, or even 30 years.”

Pace Events Managers Share College Recruitment Tips

Andrew noted that Pace Events managers actively recruit on college campuses during the spring and they welcome recent graduates to apply to the firm. “We have an extensive training program that allows new hires to gain the necessary knowledge needed to succeed,” he noted. “Therefore, grads who are still in learning mode tend to do very well as new associates here.”

“If you’re looking to hire college grads, my first piece of advice after they’ve passed your screening process would be to let them talk to some of the newer members of the firm, since those individuals would be their peers,” Andrew suggested. “Maybe even let them shadow your team members for a few days. Be clear in communicating your expectations to them and tell them what type of career paths they can expect. The more information you can provide up front, the more you allow them to make informed decisions. In the long run this will build trust and – most importantly – help you retain the most talented individuals.”

“There’s certainly something energizing about today’s grads that makes them ideal additions to any team,” Andrew concluded. “Between their up-to-date knowledge and their enthusiasm, we are always happy to recruit and hire the most talented graduates our colleges can produce.”
