Orpheus Academy of Music Presents Celebrates 10 -Year Anniversary on October 20th with A Commemorative Gala Concert Featuring Local Artists

Columbian Pianist Eugenio Zapata in Collaboration with Special Guest Dancer Yelena Knetchy Will Present "Transformations" at Gala Concert

The Orpheus Academy of Music is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this October and in commemoration, will host a Gala Concert opened to the public. Proceeds from this benefit concert will be given to Orpheus' sponsored charity, Kids in a New Groove, a nonprofit which provides music lessons to children in the foster care system.

Works performed at Orpheus' Gala Concert will not only showcase some of Orpheus' most talented guitar, voice and piano students but will also include new works written and performed by Orpheus' faculty of professional musicians. The gala concert will be held on Sunday, October 20th, 2013, 5:30pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church located at 4700 Grover Avenue in Austin, Texas. All are invited and tickets can be purchased for a nominal fee at www.orpheusacademy.com or by calling 512.231.8999

"It is only fitting that we mark the 10 year anniversary of our studio's opening with a celebration of music. And I am humbled by the depth, dedication, and level of musicianship that has been exhibited by our noteworthy teachersà and students in preparing for this Gala Concert," stated Klondike Steadman. "When we started the Orpheus Academy of Music back in 2003, our true desire was to enrich others' lives through music. It has come as somewhat of a surprise at how much this community and its music have enriched our lives in return. We hope through this commemorative concert, we can say thank you to Austin."

Included in this unique anniversary concert is a multi-media performance called "Transformations" by Columbian piano virtuoso and Orpheus' faculty member Eugenio Zapata and guest dance artist Yelena Knetchy. Involving piano, dance and photography, Mr. Zapata will perform the Rachmaninoff "Vocalise" piano arrangement with Ms. Knetchy interpretive dancing to a backdrop of stylized photographs. The performance symbolizes a woman's life journey - from childhood to old age. Through projected images and dance,"Transformations" narrates the joys and tribulations of her life and in essence, the piece personifies survival.

Another piece of interest will be Finlandia by Sibelius performed by the Honor Guitar Orchestra of the Orpheus Academy of Music. Finlandia - written for an 1899 covert Finnish protest targeted at Russia due to Russia's systematic targeted censorship of this autocratic grand duchy - became known as symbolizing force in Finland's struggle for independence from Russia. After its premiere, Finlandia when performed at later Finnish concerts was often renamed to evade the censorship by the Russian empire of the nationalistic piece.
