Opening Force of the Jam Bottle Cap - Torque Tester

The opening easiness of the bottle cap is an important factor in the quality control for those jam manufacturers. The opening easiness of bottle cap will directly influence the marketing of the products. The torque of the bottle cap cannot be too high or too low, otherwise it will be hard to open or the bottle mouth cannot be sealed tightly.

This article is to introduce the test principle and testing procedures of the torque of the jam bottle cap with NJY-20 Digital Torque Tester which may be helpful to those relative manufacturers.

1.       Objective

The jam is usually used with bread or toast. It is the mixture of fruit, sugar and acidity regulator which are processed at 100℃ in which way the nutrition of the fruit can be preserved for a long period. Currently most of the jam on the market e.g. sugar-free jam is added with edible gum. Since the jam is made of fresh fruit, the package is usually the glass bottle plus metal cap. Such kind of package is elegant as well the sugar and other nutrients can be protected properly from oxidization.

Usually the jam bottle mouth is closed by continuous thread closure, which needs to be opened manually. If the bottle cap is too tight, it will be not easy to open. If it is too loose, the jam may become deteriorated within shelf life because of gas leakage. Therefore the torque of the bottle cap needs to be tested to guarantee a proper open force and good seal performance.  NJY-20 digital torque tester is used in the tests. Through the torque tests, it can determined whether the torque force of the bottle cap is proper i.e. easy to open and won’t cause gas leakage, which can be helpful for the jam manufacturers.

2.       Standard

Currently the torque test of bottle cap is mainly performed according to ASTM D2063: Standard Test Methods for Measurement of Torque Retention for Packages with Continuous Thread Closures Using Non-Automated (Manual) Torque Testing Equipment

4.       Testing Instrument

NJY-20 Digital Torque Tester is used to test the torque when opening the bottle cap.

4.1 Test Principle

The phase difference torque sensor can detect the electrical signal when the spring mandrel is twisted by turning the bottle cap or other specimens so that the open or lock torque of the bottle cap can be calculated.

4.2 Application Scope

(1) This instruments is a professional torque tester that can be used to test the lock and open torque of the bottle caps or soft tube caps (with continuous thread) of food, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals such as canned food, hand cream and beverage, etc. Additionally it can be used to test the lock and open torque of the continuous thread closures of vacuum flask and vacuum cup.

(2) This instrument conforms to multiple national and international standards including ASTM D2063, GB/T 17876, ASTM D3198, ASTM D3474, BB/T0025 and BB/T0034.

(3) Instrument Features

l  The load cell capacity can be 20 Nm, 40 Nm or 50 Nm, with accuracy of 1%FS and resolution of 0.001 Nm

l  Clamp range is 5 mm ~ 170 mm in diameter

l  Two test modes: open force and lock force

l  Automatic retaining of peak value and recording the test results precisely

l  Intelligent designs of overload protection, automatic zeroing and error alert for safe test operation

l  The instrument is controlled by micro-computer with menu interface, PVC operation panel and large LCD display

l  Supports Lystem™ Lab Data Sharing System for uniform and systematic data management

5. Testing Procedures

(1) The jam bottle which has been conditioned in standard laboratory conditions should be clamped in the testing instrument tightly.

(2) Select “Open” as the test mode and start the test

(3) Open the bottle cap with your hand and the open torque value will be displayed in the screen automatically

(4) Test the other two specimens according to the above procedures.

6. Test Results

The open torque of the three specimens is 6.217 Nm, 5.944 Nm and 6.073 Nm respectively.

7. Conclusion

The open and lock torque as well as the open force are very important parameters for the manufacturers in quality control of the products packed in bottle and soft tube package. The torque of the jam bottle cap is tested by NJY-20 digital tester, which is featured with high testing accuracy and stability so that the opening easiness of the bottle cap can be controlled properly. The bottle cap will be easy to open and no leak problems will occur. In addition to the digital torque tester, Labthink provides the customers with testing instruments and testing service for barrier property of the bottles.
