Spain was the most visited country in Europe in 2012 with a total of 11.1 million UK holidaymakers searching for sun, sand and sea compared to 10.4 million in 2010. Back in 2011 there was a notable rise of package holidays abroad but last year they slipped by 1.8%. These figures back the travel industry's general feeling that more and more people are opting for holiday villa rentals.

Online market leader in holiday rental bookings, Travelopo have seen a significant rise in customers booking villas in majorca. The website boasts a spectacular range of over 70,000 villas in total situated in over ten different countries around the Mediterranean.

Interestingly year or year in the past both Spain and France have accounted for almost a third of all visits abroad. However, where Spain has consistently proven to be a choice destination, France has seen a decline with 8.8 million visitors less in 2012 compared to 10.9 million 3 years previously in 2008.

101 Holiday Ideas website editors and The Sunday Times travel writers Mark Hodson and David Wickers recently revealed Spain as the number one holiday destination this year when they listed what they felt to be the top 10 destinations for UK holidaymakers this year.

They cited the combination of "magnificent empty beaches with rolling countryside, mountains, medieval towns and buzzing cities" as some of the many reasons why the British have always been drawn to Spain and its Balearic islands. Coming in close second was France and in third, Greece.
