Novak Birch Welcomes Baltimore Ad Community to Wonderland for the 2020 ADDY Awards

2020 American Advertising Awards

On March 6, more than 300 advertising and marketing professionals gathered for the 46th annual American Advertising Awards (the ADDYs), a celebration of the Baltimore region’s talented creative community. Produced by Novak Birch and held at Port Discovery, the highly anticipated event invited guests to tumble down the rabbit hole and explore Wonderland.

A special year for the ADDYs, this year’s event celebrated 100 years of the American Advertising Federation of Baltimore (AAFB), originally founded as the Women’s Ad Club. In recognition of this, the AAFB presented the first annual Katherine Mahool Fowke Iconoclast Award to Kathy Harvey, founder and president of Harvey Agency.

To celebrate this milestone and commemorate the women who blazed the path for marketers to come, Novak Birch developed the event’s Wonderland theme, designing, writing, fabricating, and constructing an enchanting space that invited guests to embrace the madness. Complete with tea party settings, playing cards, flamingo croquet, a four-story slide, “drink me” potions, and “eat me” cakes, the event celebrated the industry itself, which—much like Alice—grows, shrinks, and continuously adjusts to transform nonsense into reality.

“Our industry is a wonderland of sorts, and we're here to celebrate our creativity, curiosity, and love of the unexpected. We’re a community that, as Lewis Carroll said, isn’t afraid to believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast,’’ said Jeremy Martin, the awards show chair and creative director at Novak Birch.

Echoing this sentiment, Novak Birch partner and vice president Steve Novak said, “We were honored to be part of the planning and creation of the ADDYs—especially as the AAFB celebrates its centennial. As a marketing and events agency with an in-house fabrication shop, we jumped at the chance to incorporate imaginative, custom-built elements into the show, encouraging guests to explore and interact with the stimulating space at Port Discovery.”

The AAFB awarded 18 gold ADDYs and 32 silver ADDYs to agencies, production houses, and in-house marketing teams. Two student ADDYs, a gold and a silver, were also awarded.

The following received top honors:

  • Best in Show: Bully Entertainment for Deloitte Digital—Virtual Factory integrated campaign
