NewscastStudio, the trade publication for television creative professionals, has announced the winners of its annual Set of the Year competition — with winners spanning the globe and the creative spectrum of scenic design and television production.

"The 2016 entries all combined impressive scenic design, the ever-evolving slate of technology, and the flexibility that makes this industry so exciting to cover," said Michael P. Hill, publisher and founder of NewscastStudio.

NewscastStudio assembled a panel of judges with over 100 years of combined experience in the broadcast industry to judge the entries based on visual aesthetics, flexibility of design, use of technology and use of budget.

"Our panel of judges represent an impressive cross-section of the broadcast design industry," said Dak Dillon, NewscastStudio's managing editor.

The judges picked NBC News' fourth-floor newsroom and studio from Clickspring Design in the National category, while the set for CBS Television Stations' KCBS in Los Angeles from Broadcast Design International was awarded the top honor in the Local News category.

In the International category, Al Jazeera Studio 14 in Doha from firm Veech x Veech was the judges' pick, while the studios of NBC's coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro topped the Special Event set design category with design by NBC Olympics and HD Studio.

In Sports set design, Clickspring Design's set for Turner Sports' MLB on TBS won the trophy, while MLB.TV Studio X from 3C Studio won in the Webcast category.

The set for Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg's "Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party" on VH1, designed by JPConnelly, took home top honors in the Entertainment set design category.

For the Fan Vote, which garnered nearly 15,000 votes, fans picked the set at WRIC in Richmond, Va., from FX Design Group over the design for "Martha & Snoop."

"This year's fan vote was one of the most-fascinating face-offs we've seen," said Hill.

"The design of these two sets are a perfect reflection of the incredible pool of creative talent and the broad spectrum of what can be accomplished within only a blank studio space," added Dillon.

In the competition's newest category, honoring the best in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality design, Al Arabiya's coverage of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election bested the competition, with design and technology from Vizrt and Spidercam.

The MLB on TBS also took home first place in the Lighting Design category, with lighting from The Lighting Design Group. FX Design Group's lighting design for WAVE in Louisville, Kentucky, was also honored as the best in local television Lighting Design.
