New York Tax Attorney Encourages Tax Delinquents to Pay or Face License Ban

IRS and New York state tax lawyer William Winspear, Esq., head of the Winspear Law Group, PLLC, reminds New Yorkers with over $10,000 of past-due tax liabilities to pay or risk getting their driver's license suspended.

IRS and New York state tax attorney William Winspear, Esq., head of the Winspear Law Group, PLLC, reminds New Yorkers with over $10,000 of past-due tax liabilities to pay or risk getting their driver's license suspended. The crackdown was authorized under a new law that went into effect April 1.

In a statement issued on August 5 by the office of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, the governor stated that tax scofflaws who don't abide by the rules should not have the same privileges as those who do. The new initiative is expected to increase collections by $26 million this fiscal year and $6 million each year thereafter.

Thomas H. Mattox, Commissioner of Taxation and Finance, said that it is in the taxpayers' best interests to fully pay their tax liabilities. He also guaranteed that their staff is available to arrange a payment plan that will satisfy taxpayers' tax debt in order to help those who can't pay in full. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has sent the first round of suspension notices to 16,000 New Yorkers who failed to pay their taxes.

NY tax lawyer William Winspear also reminds the recipients of suspension notices to arrange payment within 60 days after receiving a notice, or the Department of Motor Vehicles will send a second letter to taxpayers who failed to do so. "Failure of taxpayers to arrange payment after receiving the second letter could mean suspension of their driver's license until their payment plan is established or the tax debt is paid," he states.

Governor Cuomo's office noted that the delinquent taxpayers who continue to drive while the suspension is in effect will be arrested and will face penalties. However, New Yorkers with a suspended license may apply for a restricted license that will allow them to drive to work and return home.
