New Kairos Aerospace Project to Enhance Energy Industry’s Understanding of Methane Emissions

The project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, seeks to understand key drivers of methane emissions to aid in future prevention efforts.

Kairos Aerospace announced today the kickoff of its new project, Developing Methane Emissions Inventories by Fusing Airborne, Satellite and Modeled Assessments, funded by the Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management. The project will generate full-spectrum estimates of methane emissions in two significant oil- and gas-producing basins; data which will enhance the energy industry’s understanding of emissions and aid in future mitigation efforts.

“This project will be a key step towards helping the energy industry understand the distribution of methane emissions,” said Gregg Rotenberg, Kairos’ Chief Executive Officer. “Sharing insights from this work with oil and gas operators will aid their efforts to keep gas in the pipe, which is good for their business, the safety of those that work in it, and the planet.”

Kairos is the lead awardee of the Innovative Methane Measurement, Monitoring, and Mitigation Technologies (iM4 Technologies) grant, which will fund the development of reconciled inventories of emissions in the Anadarko and Haynesville basins. Stanford University, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, MiQ, and GHGSat are partners with Kairos on the project and will play a critical role in its success. The coordinated campaign will utilize cutting-edge technology to conduct airborne and satellite emissions surveys across each region, measure trends through time, and leverage state-of-the-art emissions simulation models to characterize methane emissions from the smallest to largest sources.

“The science around methane emissions is rapidly evolving,” said Dr. Elena Berman, Kairos’ Chief Science Officer. “This project gives us an opportunity to deepen our understanding of these emissions and make tangible and pragmatic strides towards a cleaner future.”

About Kairos Aerospace

Founded in 2014, Kairos Aerospace is the leader in cost-effective, high-frequency aerial methane detection for the energy industry. Kairos’ evidence-based methane solutions empower oil and gas operators to take a pragmatic approach to reducing their emissions—helping them keep gas in the pipe and their brand off the front page for the wrong reasons. Kairos’ work with oil and gas partners saved them $277 million in gas value and resulted in the mitigation of 64.4 million tonnes of CO2e in 2022.
