New Detectable Pallet Wrap Reduces Food Safety Risks

Online, October 23, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Detectamet has launched an exciting new detectable plastic product for the food industry. The new Detectable Pallet Wrap is a less risky material of final packaging for pallet handling in food warehouse storage and shipping.

A pallet overwrap can have several functions that are of general benefit to storage and distribution and provides some specific food safety benefit. A wrapped pallet is less likely to be attacked by insects, or damaged by water, and is more likely to arrive as clean as when it was despatched. A film wrapped pallet is more stable, especially when the pallet carries a variety of sizes of packs and boxes, and there is less likelihood of pilfering and any deliberate damage would be easier to identify.

The company's Managing Director Angela Musson said "Even with all these benefits the food industry has become aware of the risk of discarded wrap accidentally getting into the food processing chain undetected" Angela went on to explain "We were asked by a number of food processors and ingredient suppliers to look at ways in which we could make the film detectability."

The new Detectable Pallet Wrap has been tested through metal detectors and found to have good levels of detectability. In trials by experienced wrap users the film was described as offering a more resilient strength and was less therefore less likely to tear. This would mean that less length of wrap would be used because of fewer overwraps would be needed to finish the job

"Following discussions with the food industry a distinctive blue colouring has been added for extra protection making it easier to see in food," Angela revealed "and the greater film thickness reduces tears and speeds up loading and despatch."

There are two sizes of roll. For customers who prefer hand wrapping there is a roll 400mm wide by 200 metres long and for those using wrapping machines the roll is 500mm by 800 metres.
