National Political and Community Leaders Line-Up Endorsements for Congressional Candidate Vangie Williams of Virginia's 1st District

The campaign for Congressional candidate Vangie Williams of Virginia’s 1st Congressional District announced a list of prominent national, state and community leaders who are throwing their support behind her race.

The list of endorsements includes Gov. Ralph Northam of Virginia, Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of Virginia, Rep. Bobby Scott from Virginia’s 3rd District, Rep. Don Beyer from Virginia’s 8th District, Gerry Connolly from Virginia’s 11th District, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune, and Khizr Khan who made a riveting speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention on the US Constitution.

I believe Vangie will help turn the tide in Congress. We are both fighting for a Virginia that works for everyone - where we have an economy that creates opportunities to uplift all people, not just some. I am proud to support her campaign because she will work to increase access to affordable, world-class health care, build a strong workforce by expanding job training and fight for the benefits our military families and veterans deserve.

Sen. Tim Kaine, (D) Virginia

Governor Ralph Northam, Virginia

“I am excited to endorse Vangie Williams to become the next congresswoman for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District. Virginians want an economy that works for them, for our teachers and first responders to earn a decent wage and for families to be able to see a doctor without going broke. Vangie is the best leader who will fight for these changes because she’s committed to fighting for people. With 30 years of professional experience and an ability to solve real-world problems, Vangie will create the lasting changes we need here in Virginia and around the country.”

Senator Tim Kaine, Virginia

We are both fighting for a Virginia that works for everyone – where we have an economy that creates opportunities to uplift all people, not just some. Senator Mark Warner, Virginia

“I’m endorsing Vangie Williams to represent the people of Virginia's 1st Congressional District because she knows how to get the job done. We need people like Vangie in Congress who will fight for an economy that works for everyone, better education for our kids, access to world-class healthcare and more opportunity for all Virginians.”

Rep. Don Beyer, Virginia’s 8th District

“Vangie Williams is the right person to represent America’s First District. Her personal experiences speak to the real-life challenges facing the individuals and communities she seeks to represent, and her professional experience has equipped her to solve those challenges effectively. As someone who has served Virginia and our nation across multiple levels of government, I am proud to endorse her candidacy for Congress.”

Rep. Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District

“I am proud to endorse Vangie Williams to represent Virginia’s 1st Congressional District. Vangie is a proven leader who knows how to roll up her sleeves and get the job done. We are both fighting for accessible and affordable health care, better care for our veterans and a future with renewable energy. I am most impressed by her commitment to family and country and her years of service to her community. Vangie has the vision, experience, and qualifications to create greater opportunities for those in her district and all Virginians.”

Rep. Bobby Scott, Virginia’s 3rd District

“I am proud to endorse Vangie Williams for Congress. Vangie is the kind of leader that Congress needs – a qualified, experienced problem-solver who understands the challenges and struggles faced by the citizens of Virginia's 1st Congressional District. In Washington, she will work hard to give them a better deal.”

Khizr Khan, Gold Star father of Captain Humayun Khan

“I have had the privilege of getting to know Vangie over the past few months, and I am impressed by her dedication to not only the people of the 1st District but all Americans. She values equality for all people, as is evidenced by her stance on an economy that works for everyone and Medicare for all. She is dedicated to the restoration of our democratic institutions, and I am convinced she will be a leader among her peers to maintain the critical checks and balances our government so desperately needs. Most importantly, I know Vangie to be a woman of character who will fight for the rule of law to protect those most vulnerable among us.”

Why Vangie Williams will Win in November

50-year-old Vangie Williams has overcome obstacles throughout her life as both a woman and African-American.

As a teenager, Vangie was homeless, battling the effects of addiction in her family. But she didn't give up. She worked multiple jobs, put herself through school and earned four degrees along the way. She is now working on a Ph.D. while running for Congress. Vangie lives in King George with her six daughters, husband, and mother. She secured the Democratic party nomination in June, beating several other candidates.

Vangie currently works full time for a major government contractor as a Strategic Planner/Senior Project Control Principal where she leads projects on national security, manages critical infrastructure projects and ensures the services we rely on every day run smoothly.

“This new list of endorsements proves we have the infrastructural, political and community support to take on Rep. Rob Wittman,” said Vangie. “Our district needs a leader who will fight for our military families and veterans, affordable health care, funding for education, gun reform, women’s rights, our environment and broadband Internet in our rural communities. I will leverage my experience in government and the private sector to fight for our communities.”

America’s First District has a long history of racial struggles, making Vangie’s primary win so much more noteworthy. There has never been a woman of color to secure the Democratic nomination in the 1st District nor has a woman of Color ever represented Virginia in Congress.
