National Medical Association Supports the Supreme Court's Decision to Uphold the Affordable Care Act Subsidies

“The Supreme Court's ruling in King v. Burwell decision today to uphold the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a major victory for millions of Americans who will continue to benefit from this historic legislation. The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that federal subsidies can be offered in states with their own health insurance exchanges as well as the 34 states with federal exchanges or marketplaces, thus ensuring unimpeded coverage for those most in need.  We agree with the majority opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts that stated ‘Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them.” commented Dr. Lawrence L. Sanders Jr., National Medical Association (NMA) President.

“The NMA remains a strong advocate for health equality and access to affordable, high quality health care. We will continue to work at both the national and state levels to ensure that as many Americans as possible receive the coverage they deserve. This monumental legislation and Supreme Court decision moves us closer to extending the benefits of better health and better healthcare at lower costs to all Americans,” remarked Dr. Sanders.

We agree with the majority opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts that stated 'Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them." commented Dr. Lawrence L. Sanders Jr., National Medical Association (NMA) President.
