History of Munnar
Munnar has long back history of 10th Century when many pre-historic relics were linking for the discovery of Stone Age. During 17th Century, a group of Tamil people known as "Muthuyans" were migrated to Munnar and other areas nearby. With the convergence of three rivers - Mudrapuzha, Nallathani and Kundala, the name "Munnar" was aptly given to this place. By 19th Century, Munnar had become a part of a small tribal kingdom which claims to be one of the earliest tribal kingdoms of South India which is 'Anchunadu'. Munnar has the fertile soil which cultivates cardamom, ginger and so forth in those days.

From the British East India Company, John Daniel Munro visited Munnar around the mid of that time for gathering the permission of Maharaja of Poonjar to acquire the land of about 588 sq.km. Munro took over some of the mountains and hills of Munnar with the help of a tribal chief of Anchunadu, Kannan Thevar. By 1895, Ms. Finlay Muir & Co. has procured the land of Munro and by 1976, the same land was procured by Tata-Finlay Ltd.
