Movement Launches Campaign To End Stand-Your-Ground Laws
Online, September 4, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Over 200 cases involving the "stand-your-ground law" have evolved in Florida (including the Trayvon Martin shooting since the law took effect there, according to research done by the Tampa Bay Times..
A new non-profit grassroots activist movement has launched a website and a video campaign across America, calling for the repeal of stand-your-ground laws, which changed the Castle Doctrine in over 21 states.
The website, EndStandYourGround is intended to advocate, educate, inform, network, and help sustain the movement The video, on YouTube (watch the video here) highlights several cases (including Martin's) involving stand-your-ground, where unarmed Florida citizens were killed.
The campaign director, Wayne Filmore, said, "Self-defense under the Castle Doctrine allows a legal citizen who is not a felon the right to bear arms to protect himself, family or his property. Yet stand-your-ground allows abuse of the law away from home. It does not just remove the duty to retreat. This is not a gun control fight, but it is a fight against flawed laws that can be manipulated to allow someone to kill at will, then be justified".
The internet activism campaign is conducting an online survey of how people feel about the controversial laws, and also plans to coordinate with other supporters to deliver a unified stand against stand-your-ground through boycotts, petitions, as well as other means, to gain support and convince state lawmakers to repeal stand-your-ground laws.
Additionally, the movement has a presence on social media sites including a video channel on YouTube, a page on ([url: facebook, and a twitter.handle.
