Monica C. Smith, CEO of Marketsmith to Receive NJ State Governor's Jefferson Award for Public Service

Monica C. Smith, CEO of Marketsmith Inc., and her company will be honored with the NJ Governor’s Jefferson Award for Public Service at a special ceremony to be held June 19 at the Newark Museum.

Smith founded Marketsmith, Inc. in 1999 with a visionary model for data-driven marketing, and grew the business through innovation and determination with a guiding light to make the world a better place with every success they find. Marketsmith is now the fastest-growing, woman-owned integrated marketing agency in the country.

"I believe those of us who have found success owe it to this world to make it a better place. This is my mission: to end hunger for the children in our state and to ensure that the obstacles to learning are removed. Every child deserves to be fed, safe and educated. It is that simple."

The New Jersey State Governor's Jefferson Awards is a joint program administered by The Community Foundation of New Jersey, The Star-Ledger Powering NJ.com, and The Governor's Advisory Council on Volunteerism, with support from corporate underwriters. It is a local program of The Jefferson Awards, which is a national volunteer recognition program established in 1972 by the American Institute for Public Service in cooperation with the U.S. Senate and the White House.

Smith notes that she is deeply honored, saying, “I believe those of us who have found success owe it to this world to make it a better place. This is my mission: to end hunger for the children in our state and to ensure that the obstacles to learning are removed. Every child deserves to be fed, safe and educated. It is that simple.”

Smith has achieved an unprecedented level of success at launching start-ups and turning them into industry standard-bearers. She founded Marketsmith, Inc. in 1999 and Inc. Magazine now ranks the agency as the #1 women-led company in the NY Metro area and #5 nationwide. In August 2015, Marketsmith was ranked #97 in the Inc. 5000.

Smith also created i.Predictus in 2011. Today, the predictive analytics-based platform is the definitive leader in marketing and media automation. Then, in 2015, she purchased Brushfire, an industry-leading creative agency. For three straight years, she has driven over $1.5 billion in retail sales annually. She is responsible for the management of $200 million of media spending a year (about 10% of all DRTV inventory) and is one of only a few women who have successfully raised capital in the tech arena.

However, in addition to building world-class companies, Monica’s unparalleled desire to make a real difference in the world has led to the creation of charitable initiatives that she and her team are passionately committed to.

One More Smith, a 501(c)3 that is a permanent home and sanctuary for hard to place cats and other small animals — many with disabilities, has housed thousands since its inception in 2004. Bring Dinner Home, an annual Thanksgiving event, provides nutritious holiday dinners for hundreds of impoverished families of school children at the Camden Street Elementary School in Newark. Monica and her team also provide the families with warm coats, books and grocery store gift cards. In 2015, the sustainability initiative was expanded to include the Cedar Hills CDC After School Program in Boonton, which provides affordable childcare for working, but struggling families as well as an enriched environment for learning, as well as nutritious food.

Smith’s business innovations were driven by her desire to make a difference, as a female entrepreneur in tech and as a global citizenship leader. Her calling to help families in need and combat child hunger has become part of Marketsmith’s DNA — and is one of the reasons the firm has attracted and retained top talent, who also believe that those who have success owe it to the world to make it a better place. With the company providing time off to volunteer, 98% of the staff participates in Marketsmith charitable activities, as well as their own causes. At Marketsmith, the mission is, “We do great work so we can do good things,” and they live it every day — as well as solicit other companies to contribute and follow their example.
