Modern Advertising, Inc.'s Higher Education Partnerships

The director of operations at Modern Advertising, Inc. discussed the management's connections with local learning institutions, through which they recruit driven students.

“A new academic year is underway, and many students are seeking internships and work experience to supplement their learning,” said Mike, Modern Advertising, Inc.’s director of operations. “It’s a great time for my colleagues and me to take advantage of our partnerships with nearby colleges and universities.”

Mike explained that the firm is the ideal location for students who want to learn more about the sales and marketing industry as well as corporate office dynamics. “We don’t use entry-level workers and interns to fetch coffee for us,” he stated. “They undergo extensive training, and our most experienced team members work with them on a one-to-one basis to make sure they succeed. They continue their learning through hands-on work with the rest of the group, all of whom thrive in our upbeat and supportive culture.”

Director of Modern Advertising, Inc. Describes Strategies for Onboarding Talented Professionals

“As we look for motivated minds to join the Modern Advertising, Inc. team, we have some specific qualities in mind,” Mike continued. “We aren’t concerned so much about practical skills, because our training regimen takes care of that. I’m much more interested in soft skills – it’s not as easy to teach those.”

For instance, Mike and his hiring managers ask strategic questions that help them determine whether candidates can think on their feet. The Modern Advertising, Inc. executives also screen for empathy, the ability to collaborate, critical and creative thinking skills, and more.

“It all boils down to self-awareness and instinct,” indicated Mike. “We want people who understand how their actions affect others. There are two questions in particular that I find helpful to ask during interviews. Their answers shed a lot of light into these factors. I inquire about applicants’ experiences with group work, and I inquire about their experiences asking for help.”

When interviewees respond to the question about teamwork with stories illustrating how they handled the entire groups work in the past, attaining success singlehandedly, they raise red flags. Even if what they say is true, it’s much more preferable if they mention the merits of others. If they respond to the second question by noting that they can’t remember asking for or needing help, red flags are raised once again. “Everyone has vulnerabilities and makes mistakes,” Mike concluded. “I want people who are willing to own theirs, and who managed to learn from and overcome their challenges. It’s what drives true success.”
