Medcomic: A Breakthrough in Medical Education

Medcomic: A Breakthrough in Medical Education

Medcomic is the latest study tool in medicine.

Jorge Muniz, a board certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) has been illustrating comics that makes studying medicine fun so that it’s easy to recall important medical information. In the beginning of October, Jorge launched a Kickstarter campaign and with much support has surpassed his goal of $15,000. The funds will be used to create and publish the first Medcomic book, which will include a hundred illustrations from the past two and a half years.

Jorge’s passion for art developed at an early age while watching reruns of classic cartoons such as Looney Tunes that were produced in the 1940s and 1950s.  This passion was carried over to PA school.

Jorge attended Nova Southeastern University’s PA program located in Orlando, Florida and graduated in 2013. He currently practices as a PA in Orlando. Jorge began illustrating his cartoons while in PA school to help his classmates ace their tests. He ensures that each illustration is tasteful, carefully planned, and researched to include relevant information that would be encountered on an exam. Jorge states, “There have been instances where I’ll throw away an idea midway of completion if I feel it isn’t going to result in something that meets my standards. I always try to think, ‘if I were a student, would I find this illustration useful?’ There’s a value of quality over quantity.”

Medcomic is currently making a breakthrough in the field of medical education. The artwork is being utilized by professors in universities around the world to teach medical, PA, nursing, and many other students in the healthcare field.

Medcomic has gained an enormous following of healthcare professionals and students. The humorous art is receiving a positive response from the medical community and earning recognition from leaders such as ZDoggMD who tweeted, “Comics to teach medicine? Oh hell yeah.”

Jorge plans to continue his mission to make studying medicine fun and entertaining. He states, “There’s a lot of room for growth and I’m excited for Medcomic’s future. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to contribute a unique form of medical education with my artwork.”
