The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) is an independent, not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization. Their mission is to protect the public by providing the means to assess competencies for osteopathic medicine and similar healthcare professions.
The group recognized that the need for safe, high-quality health care has an increasing demand for assessment across training, education, and practice in medicine.
Benigno credits the core values the organization stands for since their inception in 1934.
"There are values I carry with me no matter where I was working and whoever I was providing care to," says Benigno.
Patient Safety
The primary goal for Benigno and NBOME has been the safety of patients. Diplomats pledge the priority to uphold the public's trust for safe and high-quality health care. This value goes for an individual patient to the global population.
Doing The Right Thing
Benigno has always held this value close to her heart. That is keeping the highest possible level of integrity when dealing with patients.
That means always carrying out missions with actions, communications, and standards that are honest, professional, and fair. Also, holding these pieces of integrity with the highest regard and respect for patients.
Accountability
Another core value for Benigno and NBOME is owning their outcomes. This statement means being responsible and accountable for their behaviors, actions, and results.
"I learned to own the success as one team and take personal and professional responsibility when the time calls," adds Benigno.
Excellence In The Workplace
Striving to achieve the highest quality of the work completed has been Benigno's mission statement. Also, the NBOME echoes this value.
Furthermore, gaining high quality in relationships with patients and service has become extremely important. Benigno embraces change and continuously improves and learns.
Working Together
Operating as a team is an essential factor to be successful in the medical industry. It takes collaboration to hold success and provide high-quality care to patients.
Benigno has always operated thinking of the team first and in a climate of trust, respect, and cooperation toward other co-workers. Also, this statement is true for outside visitors and patients.
"When becoming certified, I took the responsibility to carry these core values with me as I worked with patients and other professionals," says Benigno.
But being a Diplomat with the NBOME wasn't the only certification Benigno gained.
In 1999, Benigno earned the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery Certification Certificate. Gaining this certification cemented her commitment to high-quality patient care and excellence in the medical field throughout the entire career. Also, adhering to the organization's code of ethics.
The group seeks to transcend the economic, political, and religious biases when dealing with patients, fellow practitioners, and the public. The physician/patient connection and the professionalism of the physician are the basis for the code of ethics.
Furthermore, the organization has formed these guidelines to manage its member physicians in their professional lives. Also, the criteria presented are designed to address the osteopathic physician's ethical and professional responsibilities to patients, to the culture, to the board, to others involved in healthcare and to self.
"All of these certifications and guidelines make sure we all hold our actions to the highest degree of professionalism," concludes Benigno.
