Malaysia Celebrates Regatta Lepa

Festival will be held from April 27 - 29 in Semporna Sabah Amazing sailboats to be seen during the annual sailboat competition

Mumbai: Malaysia gets prepared for their Semporna Lepa Regatta in April. This year regatta will enter into its 11th year. This is an annual water festival that pays tribute to the beauty of the traditional boats of Sabah.

The event showcases the beauty of the lepa, a type of single masted sailing boat made from Ubar Suluk or Red Seraya wood, used for sailing by Bajau Pala'u community in Sabah. Lepa is typically five metres long and 1.5 metres wide. It has a house structure built on it from sago palm leaves. The boats are often decorated with beautiful and unique carvings and colourful sails that display the brave spirit of Bajau Pala'u people, who are also known for their seafaring skills.

Semporna comes to life with the Bajau seafarers unique Regatta Lepa where a competition of the most beautiful traditional sailboats is held along with other activities such as the boat-tug-war, kayak race and boat race. Water sports enthusiasts can expect a lot of action and activities like snorkelling, jet skiing, diving, etc.
