While all celebrities will ride the roller coaster of stardom, few if any will become as internationally-known and adored as Madonna. Just hearing her name spoken is enough to turn heads and get peoples attention. Her super-star status didn't come overnight, though. Like most starlets, her path to fame had an interesting beginning that shaped her into who she is today.

Madonna Louise Ciccone was born on August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan. While growing up she had huge hopes and dreams of making it. Originally she wasn't interested in singing, but instead she aspired to be a ballet dancer. In the late 1970's, Madonna moved from her hometown of Michigan to New York, where she studied ballet choreography with Alvin Ailey.

After having some success with ballet and modeling, Madonna soon paired up with Dan Gilroy to form a pop group called the Breakfast Club. In this group, Madonna started out playing the drums but eventually became the lead singer. In 1980, she left the group and begin focusing on her solo career and released several hit songs including "Everybody", "Physical Attraction" and "Holiday".

Throughout the 80's, Madonna's success only continued to rise. She continued to make hit songs with the release of "Like a Virgin", "Vogue", "Like a Prayer", "Don't Preach" "Material Girl" and "4 Minutes". In 1984, she released her second album which became a hit around the world. Madonna concert tickets were a hot item with people doing anything possible to try and get their hands on some.

Madonna received much controversy when Playboy and Penthouse magazines published nude pictures of the singer in 1985. In addition to this little hick-up, she also received backlash for her choice of wardrobe, which was considered provocative and revealing. At the time, this caused quite a stir, but fans remained loyal and followed her through thick and thin.

Madonna wasn't only known for her music, though. She starred in several films throughout the life of her career. In one particular film, Evita, Madonna won a Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of Eva Perón, who was a lower class Argentian who went on to become the first lady and spiritual leader of the country. In 1990, Madonna starred in the hit movie, "Dick Tracey".

While Madonna's popularity has had its fair share of ups and downs, she's impressed us all by remaining relevant and popular to this day. The latest Super Bowl featured a half-time performance with Madonna singing some of her past hits and a new single. Overall, reviews or her performance were positive with critics saying she still has it.

Today, Madonna still performs shows and writes her own music.
