April 17, 2018, marks the 43rd anniversary of the Cambodian Killing Fields. On this day of mourning, Cambodian-Americans in Long Beach will organize a commemoration to pay their respects and remember the three million victims who perished in the brutal Khmer Rouge communist regime of 1975-1978.

The Killing Fields Memorial Center, Inc. – a nonprofit organization that has organized the annual commemoration on every April 17 since 2005 – will hold this special event at the future home of the Killing Fields Memorial Garden, located at 1501 East Anaheim Street, Long Beach, California 90813.

In addition to the usual commemoration activities, this year’s event will focus on the construction of the Killing Fields Memorial Garden, a project conceived by the Cambodian community as a pivotal point of remembrance.

As promised, Long Beach 6th District Councilman Dee Andrews will present a check of $150,000.00 (one hundred fifty thousand dollars) to the board of the Killing Fields Memorial Center Inc., a grant from the City of Long Beach which will help with the completion of the Memorial Garden. “This is long overdue for my Cambodian brothers and sisters who escaped the Khmer Rouge for four decades, and don’t have the chance or ability to go back home. This is the place that they will feel like home, so they can reminisce, pay respects and share stories of the Killing Fields,” said Councilman Dee Andrews.

The morning services will start at 9:00 am with requiem prayers, followed by lunch at noon. The evening services will start at 5:00 pm with a flag ceremony, testimonials, requiem prayers, and candlelight vigil.
