Langston Bates' Experience at Kiewit Prepared Him for Bigger Role at Next Job
ATLANTA, October 31, 2017 (Newswire.com) - Moving up the corporate ladder at his place of work has never been a problem for Langston Bates. Working hard and performing work that stands out to his managers has become an essential professional standard Bates has set for himself.
Bates started at Kiewit Construction in November 2012 as a research analyst.
Kiewit Construction began in 1884 with two hardworking brothers and had grown into a Fortune 500 construction, mining and engineering powerhouse across the world.
Bates joined Kiewit's ethical, forward-thinking workforce and continued to build upon the company's reputation for safe, high-quality engineering.
Kiewit is continuously ranked among the top five of the Engineering News-Record Top 400 Contractors and is leading a variety of market sectors throughout North America. The company recently branched its business into Australia.
Kiewit is an employee-owned company and its assets are managed by people like Bates.
As a research analyst at the Peachtree City, Ga., office, Langston Bates provided a detailed analysis of clients, competitors and potential partners to support project pursuits in the transportation and heavy civil markets.
He also monitored the long-term progression of construction projects in the offshore, midstream and alternative fuels markets.
Langston Bates also tracked and audited internal performance data to help optimize estimating efficiency, cost versus budget and human resource management.
And the last of his daily duties consisted of performing on-call data mining to identify concise and conclusive evidence from large sets of unorganized information.
But in July 2014, Langston Bates was promoted internally to Business Development Manager. He would hold this position until his departure in December 2016, almost 2 1/2 years following the promotion.
While at Kiewit as a business development manager, Bates managed and maintained relationships with Kiewit's clients, joint venture partners and technical specialists throughout the construction industry.
Bates also represented the company at panel discussions, industry days and job fairs.
He also performed training and development seminars for research analysts in multiple divisions within Kiewit.
And Bates also administered and enhanced the district’s business intelligence procedures using a customized CRM platform, Microsoft SharePoint and numerous external databases.
Langston Bates represented Kiewit on essential projects across the country, attending many meetings and planning developmental committees.
Some of these projects were: Macon-Bibb County Procurement Department's repair of the Lamar Road Bridge, Atlanta BeltLine Inc.'s Eastside Trail Extension, Bridge Replacement on Jackson Lake Road over Mackey Creek in Henry County, Arcadis Design, Consultancy's Richland Creek Water Supply Project and Paulding County's Union Park project.
During the four years at Kiewit, Langston Bates was a part of a company that earned many awards and honors.
Some of the more notable awards were:
- One of Forbes America's Largest Private Companies list, No. 38 in 2016
- One of the Top 50 Best Workplaces by the Great Place To Work Institute Canada, 2012-2016
- FORTUNE World's Most Admired Companies, Construction and Engineering list, 2013-2016

This list is just a short sample of the accolades Kiewit earned while Bates was an employee. The experience he had while at this top-of-the-industry company was beneficial to his career.
It also helped him prepare for a more significant role at his current employer. If history repeats itself, then Bates will be climbing the ranks at his present place of work shortly.
