Kontras Quartet in Concert at Elmhurst College

Critically acclaimed string quartet opens second season at Buik Recital Hall.

The Kontras Quartet opens its second season at Buik Recital Hall at Elmhurst College on Saturday, December 5 at 3:00 PM.  The concert is part of Elmhurst College's World Music Series, and includes Haydn's witty "How Do You Do?" quartet; Shostakovich's dark and subversive Quartet No. 9; and Borodin's romantic and sweeping Quartet No. 2. The concert will be followed by a free reception with the artists.  Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for children, and free for students and staff of Elmhurst College (cash, check or credit accepted at the door).

Admired for their vibrancy, energy and technical artistry, the Kontras Quartet has earned a dedicated following for their delightful musical personality. Kontras performs both beloved masterpieces and lesser-known musical gems from every corner of the world.  The Kontras Quartet records for MSR Classics and Double Time Music, and their two recently released albums have garnered stellar reviews from Gramophone and Fanfare Magazine.  Kontras has also earned acclaim for their ongoing collaboration with bluegrass sensations The Kruger Brothers, including performances on Late Night with David Letterman and at IBMA, MerleFest and Telluride, three of the largest bluegrass festivals in the world.  The Quartet's performances can frequently be heard on national public radio, including shows such as Performance Today and Concierto.

To say that the playing was impressive would be an understatement. The performance was full of life, clean, crisp, and vibrant. It is evident that the Kontras Quartet has worked hard and has become a tightly crafted and beautiful instrument.
