Khem Fest Returns to Newark, NJ April 13, Adds Animation Festival and New Location

Khem Fest is back for its fifth annual convention on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the beautiful Hahne & Co. Building, located at 50 Halsey St. in downtown Newark, New Jersey from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., followed by the first annual Khem Animation Film Festival Awards (KAFF) at 6 p.m.

PBS Media and Musuyanama Women’s Group have teamed up to bring you this all-ages celebration of comics, animation, video games and more! It will be jam-packed with panels, workshops, gaming, cosplay and a full marketplace of vendors and artists. KAFF animation screenings will be held throughout the day, celebrating the work of aspiring animators and directors who will be honored at the award ceremony immediately following the day's events. 

Thousands of attendees have participated in Khem Fest since its flagship event in 2014, and the convention serves as an incredible opportunity for networking as well. Offering game development seminars, STEM LAB, 3D printing, a comic book marketplace, panel discussions, a video gaming lounge, a student showcase, art galleries and more. 

Khem Fest is proud to partner with Malcolm X Shabazz High School, Newark Public Schools, NJIT, Believe in Newark, Rutgers, P&G Bank, Launch Pad, The TKB Report, City of Newark, New Jersey and the newly renovated Hahne & Co. Building, which provides the perfect stage for Khem Fest and the Khem Animation Film Festival (KAFF).

ABOUT KHEM FEST KHEM FEST uses comics, animation, film and technology to develop youth literacy, inspire expression and critical thinking through S.T.E.A.M. (Science Tech Engineering Arts Mathematics). By showcasing creators of color and their culture, concepts and interests, the event better serves and reflects the Newark community at large. The festival is no longer just about comic books, however, as other genres, such as speculative fiction, video games, writing, collectible toys, filmmaking, costuming, music,  dance and artistic expressions, are represented.

Deriving from the West African language, Diuola (Dy-u-la), Musuyanama, meaning "Beautiful Woman" is a plateau that aspires to unite women of all races, backgrounds and professions and provide for them a platform to be heard. Its founders, Rafiah Muhammad and Vonetta Reeves, launched Musuyanama with the purpose of bringing women into full participation in society - sharing success, advice and offering services to other women around the community.
