Key Note Report: Lifestyle Magazine Sector Continues to Report Falling Circulations

According to market analyst Key Note the market for men's and women's lifestyle magazines continues to experience difficult trading conditions.

According to Lifestyle Magazines, a new Market Report from market intelligence provider Key Note, the market for men's and women's lifestyle magazines continues to experience difficult trading conditions. The print circulations of many of the leading lifestyle publications have been falling for more than a decade as consumers have moved away from purchasing the printed word and towards online and often free, digital alternatives. The fall in the circulation of these lifestyle magazines and in the consumer magazines industry as a whole (of which lifestyle magazines represent an important segment) has led to a corresponding reduction in the amount of advertising spent in these magazines and ongoing reductions in the value of the market.

The lifestyle magazine sector consists of both women’s and men’s magazines. The women’s sector is by far the larger of the two markets and covers both women’s weekly and women’s monthly publications. Digital editions of lifestyle magazines still represent a small proportion of print circulations, although in recent years, the numbers of magazines offering them has increased. However, after a period of sustained growth over several years, digital edition circulations in the first half of 2015 show a more mixed picture, with a number of leading lifestyle magazines reporting lower digital circulations compared with 2014.

To counter the impact of falling magazine circulations, some of the leading publishers are developing innovative approaches to reach their audience. For example, some publishers are making multi-million-pound investments in new marketing and distribution strategies for their leading titles, while others are investing heavily in their magazine brands’ websites in order to attract and market products online to the magazines’ readerships.
