Online, August 23, 2012 (Newswire.com) - This year Labor Day falls on September 3. Unlike recent years, America is expecting more travelers to be hitting the road this year than it has since the recession began in 2007.

Tourism has already been up throughout the summer with the number of travelers higher on all this summers major holidays and it appears that the trend is continuing. According to one source, the number of American's expected to be on the road during the upcoming holiday is over 30 million, an increase of over 2.9 percent from last year according to AAA.

Despite the rising cost of gas, people are still planning on packing up and heading out to destinations over 50 miles to enjoy this one last weekend getaway before schools start back up. Though travelers can always expect to see a spike in gas prices in tourist areas as gas stations scramble to make an extra buck during the weekend rushes, the average gas price has been steadily on the rise for almost two months across the country. Though prices are lower than they were at their highest in April, travelers can still expect to be paying more than they did on the fourth of July holiday.

The average cost of gas across the nation right now is $3.744 per gallon which is up from 3.58 a year ago this week. Despite this annoying rise in gas, still travelers are expected to hit the road this Labor Day to enjoy the fun and festivities of this uniquely American celebration.

Labor Day travelers who are concerned with the cost of gas when traveling are encouraged to get to know the many ways that they can save gas including using cruise control when possible, slowing down and relaxing, avoiding stop and start traffic and even utilizing travel apps which will allow them to find the least expensive gas in the area.
