J.R. Rothstein Completes Fulbright Fellowship

J.R.

J.R. Rothstein of Manhattan, New York has completed a Fulbright Scholar award from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

Rothstein spent the academic year as a visiting scholar at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, where he lectured and engaged in a comparative law analysis of Canadian and United States real estate transactions. Rothstein also explored how both Jewish and Islamic finance laws manifest themselves in modern real estate transactions. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected by a U.S. Presidential committee on the basis of academic and professional achievement as well as record of service and leadership potential in their fields.

Rothstein selected the city of Toronto, with the University of Toronto at its center, over other cities, as the place to be a Fulbright Fellow. Rothstein, who is a New York based transactional real estate attorney and investor, described Toronto as the perfect location ground to explore the convergence and divergence between these two legal traditions. “Toronto, with the University of Toronto at its center, is the number two financial-hub in North-America. It is one of the primary sources of funds for New York-based developers and investors. There are many parallels between the two cities. With all the changes and opportunities happening with Toronto real estate, there was no other place I wanted to be.“

Rothstein, who also studied real estate development at New York University, and received a B.A. in Middle-Eastern studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, brings practical legal experience to the Fulbright Fellowship. In addition to being a real estate attorney, he received both his Juris Doctor, and Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law from Cornell Law School, where he was Editor of the Journal of Law and Public Policy and an Albert Heit Scholarship recipient. He later served as a federal law clerk in the Eastern District of New York for the Honorable I. Leo Glasser.

Mr. Rothstein’s real estate law practice includes development, acquisitions and dispositions, and leasing transactions of real property. During his career, Mr. Rothstein has worked with numerous corporate and individual clients, including property managers, investors, developers, and cooperatives. Mr. Rothstein provides legal support and advice on all real estate matters. His legal advice goes beyond the law and responds creatively and strategically to meet business needs. Mr. Rothstein, a real estate investor himself, instinctively understands the needs of his clients and often syndicates real estate deals among his clients.

Fulbrighters like Rothstein address critical global challenges in all areas while building relationships, knowledge, and leadership in support of the long-term interests of the United States. Fulbright alumni have achieved distinction in many fields, including 57 who have been awarded the Nobel Prize, 82 who have received Pulitzer Prizes, and 37 who have served as a CEOs of major companies, heads of state or government.

During his time in Toronto, Mr. Rothstein was a resident of the Moishe House Toronto where he worked on a grassroots level in community building. This parallels what he did in New York where he was the founder of the Entrepreneur Shabbat Dinner Series, for which he was awarded the JICNY Pinnacle of Leadership Award in 2017. He was recently a finalist of 36 under 36 of young Jewish leaders.
